Have you ever glanced at your calendar and wondered if someone had swapped it out for the President's agenda? That's how I felt last week when I looked at my calendar for December. There were few days without at least two obligations. When my schedule is crammed full the first thing I do is make my priority list and start dividing and conquering. The priority this past week was tackling my holiday shopping so that I could enjoy the holiday season (and the reason for my lack of posting.)While I did complete the majority of my shopping by Friday afternoon I ended up putting other things, namely exercise, on the bottom of my list, never a good plan.
I'm a big advocate of learning to acclimate to whatever changes, temporary or otherwise, occur in your life. During the holidays when I'm busier than usual this means that I have to find creative ways to fit workouts in to my hectic week. Wanting to get going first thing in the morning, this week I felt like my best bet was to workout in the evening. Unfortunately, by the time I returned from shopping each day it was time to pick my daughter up from school. Every day it was the same, there was a pantry that needed filling , laundry that need washing, a house that need to be cleaned before dinner could be prepared. By the time there was a break to fit in a workout I was exhausted from a day of constant activity, I would decide to put off working out until the next day. By yesterday morning I'd only managed to work out once. The only thing I wanted to do was sit in a chair with my Christmas mug filled with coffee and watch cheesy holiday movies on The Hallmark Channel. The time off from exercise caused a definite drain to my energy and left my joints feeling stiff, exactly the opposite of what a person needs when they are busier than usual.
What I learned this week was that sometimes when life gets busy it's important to retain habits that are going to increase your energy. Finding time to get in a workout, even if it's an abbreviated session, and insisting on healthy meals instead of reaching for the whatever is most convenient goes a long way in taking the stress out of those crazy periods in life when there is more on your plate than usual. For me, sticking to my normal morning workouts is a must. Eating a healthy breakfast before heading out in the morning and bringing bottled water and a snack with me while running errands could help keep my energy up. If all else fails, maybe I could hire a personal shopper!
This is truely a busy busy time of year! My plan is to get in 5 workouts each week...some of these workouts may be a quick 1 mile run, but it is something!
ReplyDeleteGreat advice! I got caught out shopping last week through the lunch hour and didn't have any food with me. I did find a nice little snack at Starbucks that contained a mini pita bread, 1/4 cup of hummus, little tomatoes, carrot and zucchini sticks! That and a bottle of water kept me going until I could get home and eat.
ReplyDeleteI didn't do well exercising those days, I was too tired after all that shopping! I should have gone for my morning walk and then gone shopping. Like you it is a lesson learned.
I am so with you on keeping to my workouts as much as possible & my eats too. I like getting that workout in first before the day can stop me & I eat my regular ole way & plan for the treats.... and yes, if I have to cut is short, I do but I don't miss it & I may up the intensity...
ReplyDeleteKaren, great post & I am sure people understand this all too well!
HaHa!! I bet you get plenty of applicants for the personal shopper job!
ReplyDeleteA healthy lifestyle consists of a healthy exercising and eating regime.Yes it is very essential to exercise after a certain age.The limbs and the bones must have some activity and the blood circulation should be good.
ReplyDeleteOh man can I relate to this one! This time of year is always busy for me, with the holidays and all of my children's birthdays. It is nice to slow down and continue with routines to keep a clear head during this hectic time. The gym has become my sanctuary. :)
ReplyDeleteHope you are well Karen!
Ahhh yes! the Hallmark Channel has the best holiday cheesiness around. :)
ReplyDeleteOH! How I absolutely LOVE those cheesy holiday movies on Hallmark too!
ReplyDeleteHave a pretty day!
Kristin
I hope your December has been relaxing and that you have accomplished everything you set out to do (or most of it!). I felt the same way as you did when looking at my calendar this month, and sadly my January calendar is even MORE packed! You know what I've started doing due to my lack of workouts/intense workouts? Wearing weights on my ankles at work!! Hey, it's dumb, but I think it helps, and it makes me feel better about skipping a couple workouts!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you Karen! I spent my December actively trying to DO LESS and still enjoy my holidays. I didn't do the usual baking, skipped a few holiday shindigs that weren't that high on my priority list and protected my workout time like no bodies business! Turned out to be the best holiday yet! I hope yours was the same.

ReplyDeleteThis is so true. It is so important to do things that will free your energyu resources and I find the best ways to do this is by doing things that good for you. Eating a healthy meal, sqeezing in a short nap or even just laying down with some soft music. Sometimes I just hop on my trampoline for like 5 mins and it really flushes blood around my body and invigorates me to keep going.
