The Best Tips for Those Just Starting Out

Do you think there's something wrong with my scale, it says I weigh "0"?

Those of you who have been reading for a while may know that one of my interests is interior design. I write a design blog and love reading about the latest trends in home design. This week one of my favorite design bloggers, Lakeitha from Home to Three Duncan Boys, shared her desire to drop some weight. Lakeitha's children are like stair steps, one born right on the heels of the next. Since her pregnancies were so close together, she wasn't able to drop the baby weight like she would have liked.

When Lakeitha asked her blogging friends for advice, it made me stop and think about what tips a newbie might benefit from hearing, especially new moms who may never have had an issue with weight before. I came up with a list of the three best tried and true tips that helped me succeed in losing the 50 lbs I gained with my first pregnancy (and helped prevent me from gaining that much with my second pregnancy!)

Do not bring junk food into the house. I repeat, do not buy any junk food and bring it home. Once it's in the house it will be screaming your name like a banshee. This includes an
ything that comes packaged in a cardboard box or a bag that makes a crunchy sound when you take it off the grocery store shelf. Other good indications that a food might not be for you is if it has a list of a zillion ingredients with lots of syllables or is a color that does not appear in nature. For instance, have you ever seen the color of Cheez Whiz in nature? I've never seen that particular shade on a trip to the botanical gardens.

It's not just street drugs that you should say no to!

Get some physical activity every day. Your lifestyle will determine the type of activity that will work best for you. If you work full time it might mean getting up earlier than usual to fit in a workout. If you are a busy SAHM, include the children in your workouts. When my children were babies that meant twice-a-day walks with the kiddies in the stroller. As they grew, playing outside together or letting them share in the yard work did nicely. (Check out this post on working out with your children.)
Whatever you choose, make it something that you enjoy. If you dread it, you will quit before you see results.

Well, the kids have smiles on their faces. That's a start.

Include the occasional treat, but make it for special occasions only. Treats then become associated with good times instead of an everyday occurrence. Use treats as a way of making good memories.

Plan ahead. When it comes to your meals, always have a plan. Busy families like Lakeitha's can count on having lots of curve balls thrown their way. You never know when a child is going to get sick or the car is going to break down. Things like preparing and freezing healthy dishes that can be pulled out when a minor crisis occurs can be the difference between getting a decent meal on the table or resorting to fast food take out. For more tips, check out this post on my kind of fast food.

Now that I've shared my top three, how about helping Lakeitha out by sharing your best tip or stopping by to offer her a little support and encouragement. You can find her here.

  1. I totally agree with your suggestions! They work too!

I would add in my favs - consistency & patience - as you need both to follow thru with a lifestyle change & program.

Love your physical activity too & people need to remember that breaking it up into 10-15 minute workouts thru the day is fine if that is all you can do.. just up the intensity & then that play with the kids is icing on the cake!

I have a friend that brings exercise bands & stuff to her sons' soccer practices during the week & also she jogs, lunges & more while there...

  2. Karen- If you get a chance, please stop by my post "Heart Rate Question." So far no one has been able to help me.

    Thanks- Jess

  3. I agree wholeheartedly with your advice. I dropped the post-baby weight fairly quickly because I got active fast. One thing that helps, too, is to workout alongside other moms. You can share war stories and support each other. I have seen groups of moms running with their kids in strollers, and I'm sure this helps keep everyone motivated.

  5. Accountability, responsibility, and pushing yourself. I've learned to be accountable for my food intake and exercises. I've taken responsibility for my weight and why I was over 300 lbs. before. And I've pushed myself everyday to keep things interesting at the gym and to also see my results. Tell her good luck and that we're all encouraging her on her new journey!

  6. Great post with good information!

Being a good example goes a long way.

Kids are watching and mimicking every move you make.

  7. Great post!

One of my biggest aids was carrying water with me wherever I go. If I put lots of ice in it, I was sure to drink more, and it would stay cooler for longer. And it's easier than trying to remember to drink your 8 glasses throughout the day.

A lot of the time, dehydration can be mistaken for hunger. If I drink lots of water throughout the day, I always eat less!

  8. So true about the color of Cheese Whiz! The same color used to dye those skanky cheese peanut butter crackers.

Vegetables, Lakeitha, vegetables. As many non-starchy veggies as you can put into your mouth to chew and swallow. A swamping of vegetables shocks the body into letting go of weight. It's true!

  9. love your thoughts and know for me in ALL AREAS OF LIFE it's about the consistency.

  10. I think the Acai Berry lady above needs to take her name off this blog post! Ugh. That's the way to get scammed, NOT lose weight.

I love your tips, but I Think the most important one is planning ahead. It's almost impossible to lose weight without doing some serious planning. It may take a while to get used to, but once you get into it and you start a habit of planning ahead, it gets really easy!

  11. Ok, this one is a stretch but I have had people use this before with success.

Perhaps she could write out a contract to herself, declaring a binding agreement to lose XX amount of weight during XX amount of time. Then, she cold establish a support system of 3 or 4 good friends and send the signed contract to each of them.

This process might seem a bit gimmicky, but I have seen it work in several instances.

Just having other accountable parties involved can help the motivated stay motivated.

    Just a thought.

  12. Hi,
I believe your blog is award winning and definitely merits an award that I will post on my blog on Wed morning. But before you go to my blog I would like you to know how much inspiration I get on my weight loss journey because of your success and commitment (plus all the pictures) to being healthy. I reviewed many blogs before I decided on the “six.” I hope you will accept this award (and I hope you did not receive it before). 13. Great tips! One I would add is to be patient. If you do it the right way the pounds may come off slower than you'd like, but you are more likely to keep the pounds off. Make healthy choices and stick to them, even when the pounds are slower to fall off.

I didn't know you had a design blog. I will have to check it out. You are so talented!

  14. Great tips Karen. I really wish I could share some tips but I failed miserably at the pregnancy-weight gain thing. I've had three pregnancies and gained 80 lbs in one of them. I just could not control myself and thought it was a free for all. I guess that would be my tip - don't think it's a free for all to eat whatever just because you're pregnant!

  15. What a nice idea to go back to basics and think of the newbie

I'd say from my experience the biggest thing is just to start - not search for the "perfect" or "best" diet & exercise plan just start something, even just part of something, and fine tune as you go.

  16. Great tips! I definitely agree about the junk food. I took a behavioral psych class in college, and my professor said, "We're not Ghandi. We can't always say no to something that's in our face constantly. So make sure that the thing is not in your face!" This goes for junk food too!
