If It Doesn't Excite You, Move On

It's been a year this week since I joined the gym where I currently workout. While I had been a member at other gyms previously, this gym was a little different. A co-worker of my husband described it as "having everything you could think of and a few things you wouldn't have thought of."

During the first few months at the new gym it was fun trying new machines and equipment that I'd never used. Eventually, I got stuck in a routine and got bored. My progress halted. I had to find something new that could get me excited about working out again. That's when I started working with a personal trainer. Training with Gregg, it's always something new. No boredom there.

However, when I train on my own I have to be mindful to move on when I lose excitement over my workouts. When exercise feels like a chore, it's vital to put some thought into finding a new form of exercise that will provide a challenge and something to look forward to doing. All through the fall and winter my cardio routine consisted on mainly 40-60 minutes of intervals on the elliptical machine at the gym. When I broke my toe and couldn't put that much pressure on my foot, I found biking as not only a good option but something I look forward to doing.

Just like Gregg mixes up my workouts when I train with him, I can mix up my route when I bike. Some days I ride to a nearby park and head to the wooded trails within. The smell of the newly budding trees and the sounds of the birds enhance the experience. Other days I'll ride through my own neighborhood and the surrounding areas first thing in the morning after my daughter heads out to school. It's fun to see the remnants of the sidewalk chalk masterpieces left by the neighborhood children on the driveways. Morning is such a peaceful time to take a ride and gives me a chance to mentally plan my day. Time tends to pass quickly when I'm enjoying my ride, it doesn't feel like exercise in the least.

Spring and summer is the ideal time to experiment with different forms of exercise and find one that excites you. Swimming, biking, rollerblading, rowing and hiking are all great forms of exercise that are also fun. The best part about these activities is that they can be done solo or with other people if you like to combine socializing with fitness. When you find a type of exercise that you look forward to doing it no longer feels like an obligation, it's just fun.

Are you less than thrilled with your current routine? Will you be trying something new this summer?

  1. So many times in my life exercise has felt like a chore. I am trying to learn from my past failed attempts to get healthy, and learning allot from bloggers I love like you too, that I have to be open minded like never before. I have to look for new places to walk. I have to look for different exercises to do with my set of dumbbells. I have to realize I can make exercise something that is challenging and something to look forward to.

  2. I'm grateful that for today, my workout is feeling good and I'm thrilled to be able to do it - given that I was down for several months after knee surgeries. I am doing some different things - biking and swimming, but still enjoy brisk walking as much as anything. But when these things become a chore I know that mixing it up is essential. I'm also starting to consider working with a personal trainer at the gym for a bit but really don't have the extra $. Still might do it anyway!

  3. I was so bored with my elliptical over the past months while my injury healed and very happy to get back on my bike outside. The time passes faster that way for me too:) I am looking forward to healing more and being able to add back strength training and yoga.

  4. Such a good point. I think that's why a lot of people end up ditching exercise: they get bored and don't try something different. I used to be that way too. I always try to do a mix of workouts throughout the week from lifting to running, step aerobics, and kickboxing.

  5. To the exercise world at large (at trim?), my exercise routine of walking on a treadmill for an hour, four to five times a week, would seem like death-from-boredom. However, it's the one hour of TV that I allow myself, so it motivates me.

Can't afford a gym, a personal trainer, or the time it takes to travel back and forth to another place to exercise, so I have to stick with what I can manage.

I am going to look into a strength-training video. What do you suggest for the lowest level of weakling?

  6. I really like this Karen, mostly because I relate. This time of year (here) is perfect bike riding season. Thought there are many good routes to ride, on my riding days lately I have just "freelanced" it. That is, I block of 90 minutes and just ride -- taking different turns, going different directions, taking in different sights, smells, and breezes from different directions. I have really grown to love these rides.

  7. Bike riding is awesome! I love this time of year cause I get out there pretty much everyday. I agree with you about your workouts needing to be fun and not a chore.

  8. Great post! I wholeheartedly believe that the best exercise routine is one that you love! For me the key is doing a variety of workouts every week - a combo of running, strength training, elliptical, and workout DVDs.

  9. I am not a bike rider... but as my post yesterday said... I find things that meet my needs & make me feel like I accomplished something good & yes, some of them I love, some I like & some are so-so & I am fine with that. I mix it up all the time & I do think that is important. We all have to find our own way & mixing it up helps! :-)

  10. Genie-I would suggest starting with a pilates dvd. Pilates helps develop the core muscles where all movement originates. Check your local library to try before you buy or look for used copies on Amazon.

  11. I really need to get a personal trainer. The best workout I had was with Vaughn at Urban Active. It was fabulous. When I get a new job I think I will splurge an pay for a month's worth, or at least 5 sessions. Until then I need to start getting motivated and trying new things!! It's hard, but I know I can do it.

  12. Great Post! I had so much fun running outside during winter and spring. Now, most days it is 90+ outside, and I just can't force myself to get out there anymore...I've moved inside to the treadmill, but I find it boring! I need to figure out how to spice things up :)

  13. I am a wanna be swimmer (take a master swim class) and my running has improved. People keep asking me when I am going to try my first tri - I gotta admit - I am scared of the bike!!!!!

  14. GREAT post!@ You are right. I really love the recumbent bike and hate the treadmill. So, I need to get back on the bike. I am going to have a personal trainer this summer because I really need that guidance.
    Have a great weekend,

  15. Karen this is such a timely post for me. I have been in a slump ever since we moved from Ohio, nice, flat, filled with rollerblading trails Ohio. I love to rollerblade. I bladed everyday from the McCord Rd. parking lot to U.T. and back. I haven't been able to touch my blades in a year because it is simply too hilly and pot-holey here and the trails are few and far between.

I've tried classes at the gym. The elliptical. Yoga. Pilates. Nothing has clicked quite as well as rollerblading did. I needed to re-adjust my mindset and get over the darn blades already! Your post helped me to just that.

  16. Fortunately I haven't grown tired of my exercise yet. Maybe because I'm doing 4 different things each week.

My ask the trainer question this week is:
Can I swim 3-4 days in a row to try and catch up on my training or is it like everything else in that I should take a rest day between sessions?

  17. I just joined a new gym and it has a pool, and while I am not that great of a swimmer, I usually use a floaty kick board for a good leg workout.

I am starting a 101 Days of Summer Challenge on my blog to help keep me motivated - fingers crossed it works!

  18. I've just become totally energized since I joined the gym. I'd been working out and running at home and had gotten so bored. I'm definitely going to incorporate more strength training into my life!

  19. This is a great thing to remember. I've had my moments of boredom. I'm actually considering checking out some other gyms in my area. My current gym has really old equipment, but I just would feel a little bad moving on since that's where I started. But I think I'm going to have to see what else is out there, you know?

  20. Karen, That os hilarious! YES! Life is too short for granny pannties! I agree! Unless you are working out NO TENNIS SHOES, and don't even get me started on those "boxy" man style tshirts!
Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment, cracked me up and made my day!
    Have a pretty night,
    Kristin

  21. I realized this recently with my water aerobics class. I truly love exercising in water. So at one point I decided if a Saturday class was good, then Tues/Thurs/Sat classes would be even better. Nope. It started feeling like a chore trying to get there. Now I am back to just Saturday morning classes and I look forward to them every single time.

  22. As long as I can work out outside, I'm good. When it's rainy or really cold, I have a hard time motivating to work out inside. Even if I'm doing the same thing over and over, the fresh air makes it seem effortless.
