Besides being elected to the office of President of the United States, what do George W. Bush and Barack Obama have in common? Certainly not their politics. There political ideologies are on opposite ends of a continuum. However, both men do share a common belief. They both see the value of fitness. It has widely been reported that Barack Obama requested the construction of a basketball court at the White House. He has been said to start every morning in the gym. (I think his lovely wife, Michelle, has been dropping in too. Have you seen her arms?)
While in office, George W. was routinely photographed on his morning runs.

Whether or not you agree with their policies, we can all agree that leaders of nations have stressful jobs that don't end each day at 5:00 p.m. What both Bush and Obama recognize is the benefit that fitness has on their mental clarity and energy.
When I was in college I regularly used the excuse that full-time studies and part-time jobs didn't leave me much time for fitness. As a twenty-something working full time, I was too exhausted most days after giving my all at work. It wasn't until my first child was born that I realized how vital exercise was to leading a healthy life and having the energy to take care of a child. A light bulb went off in my head. There is a helpless child who needs me to take care of his every need. I need to be there for him. That is when I stopped making excuses.
If you are a college student, does your campus have a fitness center? Even most community colleges offer one. Your tuition covers the cost, why not take advantage. Get the blood flowing to the brain and studying will come so much easier.
How about you young working men and women just starting your careers. You are working full time and probably putting in a lot of extra hours to get ahead. Does your company offer a flexible work day? Are you able to come in an hour early so that you can extend your lunch hour? If so, you could do a mid-day workout and still have your evening free. What better way to beat the afternoon energy drain than to fit a workout into the middle of the day.
Are you a stay-at-home parent? The demands of raising a child are underrated. I know, I've been there. There are meals to be prepared, diapers to be changed, laundry, cleaning, etc... Consider starting your day an hour earlier. Get up before the kids and get in a half hour of time for yourself. If losing an hour of sleep doesn't do it for you, consider getting the kids involved in your workout routine. (Remember this post on the subject?) Instead of spending family time taking the kids to a movie complete with butter drenched popcorn, think about activities that incorporate fitness. A day at a skating rink, sledding, biking or playing in the park is just as fun. Trust me, at bed time, you'll be glad that you did. Kids sleep so much more soundly after a full day of activity-and less time at home means less time for the kids to make a new mess for you to clean!
That leaves the rest of us. Regardless of our age or employment status, we can all find time to workout. Do you watch at least 30 minutes of television every day? Take a tip from my blogging friend PK at Room Remix. PK records some of her favorite shows and only watches them while working out.
I ask you, if the leaders of the free world can find time for fitness, can't we all?
Do you have any tried and true solutions for fitting exercise into your day?

Such a good point- if the leader of our country can find time to exercise, so can we! I try to get my workout in in the morning as frequently as possible. That way, it's done and I'm not tempted to skip in the afternoon when I'm tired!
ReplyDeleteThat makes me feel so lazy!
ReplyDeleteStopping by from SITS!
Yes! Of course it helps to have a basketball court in our homes and trainers that come to our home gyms:)
ReplyDeleteI must admit, Michelle Obama's arms are a great inspiration for me!! Wow!!
ReplyDeleteI am not only a stay at home mom, but the main caretaker of my special needs son. So for me it is SO important to get up before everyone and get my workout done and over. I never know what my day will be like. And it is the biggest stress reliever I know;)
My only tried and true method is getting up and doing it early! It has been incredibly easy to get the necessary workouts in for my training when I do it before the stresses of life, exhaustion, etc. take over. It takes it out of me mentally to have a workout looming over my head. Especially when I want to just enjoy an evening sitting and relaxing!
ReplyDeleteI'm a get up and do it early person. I actually was just lounging in bed and thinking about skipping my yoga class this morning, but you've totally changed that. I'm going to get up and go and do something good for my body. (Stopped by from SITS and will be back again in the future)
ReplyDeleteThanks for putting things into perspective.
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I find many people use the excuse of being too busy as a reason not to get the exercise we all need. I,myself, used that excuse so many times prior to my healthy life change. Now I workout 6 mornings a week for an hour before I head to work. Yeah does that mean I get up earlier than I used too? Yup, but nothing can beat the extra energy I have through the day when I workout in the morning.
ReplyDeleteI am a stay at home maid..er..mom and you are so right about getting up a little earlier. I do that now and it helps tremendously. I feel so much more energetic if I get up and workout first thing.
ReplyDeleteI am a stay at home mom too. I LOVE to be alone. My alone time consists of the treadmill, my favorite shows on Hulu and an hour or so before I'm 'needed'. I feel better.
ReplyDeleteMy tried and true way is training for a race(half marathon right now) because I know I have to get my exercise in or I won't be ready. Also, I get to the gym on the weekdays at 5AM and weekends, I allow myself to pick the time I want to go running.
ReplyDeleteActually what hit home for me was a coworker whose hubby was stationed overseas. She has 2 kids, was going to school 1 nite per week and working full time. I thought hell, I can do it if she can do it - I was working full time and going to school full time at night. I hated the gym on campus so I worked out at home.
ReplyDeleteI won't lie, however, it's so much easier for me to leave work and head straight to the gym. I will have to rethink this schedule once I start grad school.
I agree. Too often people make excuses and say they don't have enough time to do everything. However, it is really all about priorities and being organized.
ReplyDeleteI will say one thing though. It would be nice to be able to afford a chef, a personal trainer, an assistant who keeps everything organized, and another person to stand beside me and poke me when I'm eating the wrong foods.
Rich people have less of an excuse then poor people do when it comes to being fat.
I guess my "tried and true" solution is that I have made it a priority and just do it! When in med school, for example, if I had to get up at 4 am to run, I did. With my job as a surgeon, I run at 6 in the morning, a definite improvement :-)
ReplyDeleteKaren I have seen Mrs. Obama's arms and they are AWESOME. I want me some. LOL
ReplyDeleteYou are right. There shouldn't be any excuses. You have to MAKE THE CHOICE and just freaking do it!!!! It's your life that's on the line here.
I love the blogging community, its tough love, and no excuses reminders. Without it, it would be easier to slip away into old habits.
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of the "I'm too busy" excuses can be translated to "I haven't broken old habits, yet, and won't make it a priority."
I have a lot of changes to make in my own life, and those habits are hard to break, but break they will.
This is an awesome post! I was actually planning on writing something similar b/c I am a seriously busy person who could easily make every excuse in the world to not exercise but the truth is- you make time for the things that matter.
ReplyDeleteKaren, how do you pop out one fantastic post after another? :) lol
You are so right! I find that I have to schedule my workouts into my calendar ahead of time because if I don't I'll always find myself filling the time up with work or emails or something else.
ReplyDeleteHi Karen..
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my blog..My journey is in transition..so is my blog..(excuse its "under construction look)lol..Im still learning how to use it..I am excited about my new journey..healing on the inside to be better on the outside...and nutrition, not diet, is certainly the key for me!

Really great point. I have a lot of people tell me they can't work out because they have kids, or work full-time, or whatever. I generally tell them, (very nicely) that we all find time for the things that are important to us.
ReplyDeleteI don't recommend it but losing my job last November allows me the time to go to the gym almost every single day. Who am I? and what will happen when I have to go back to work? Time will tell.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
ReplyDeleteEven though I'm working to lose weight now, I want to exercise forever. Our health is one of the few things we have control over. Thank You for sharing. Your posts are always so thought provoking.
