Craving Carbs

Most women I know have a sweet tooth. They love their chocolate, cookies and cake. For me, my carb of choice is bread. I don't buy a lot of white bread, it's whole wheat all the way. I make an effort not to buy anything that will tempt me. If it isn't in the house, I'm not likely to get in my car to go buy it. But when I go out to eat, the white bread and oil that inevitably comes before the entree always calls my name. (Actually, it is screaming my name at the top of its lungs!) My husband and I usually go out to eat at least once on the weekends and I meet friends for lunch or coffee during the week. What's a cup of coffee without a bagel, right?

I decided to try a little experiment, no simple carbs for one week. No white flour, white sugar or sweets for one week. I was amazed at the results. Not only have the cravings gone away, I feel so much more energetic. When the alarm clock goes off in the morning, I haven't felt the need to slap it into submission. At the end of the day, I'm not feeling lethargic, just pleasantly tired.

If you can get through the first few days, it's a piece of cake. (Sorry, bad choice of words!)

  1. More power to you!

Bread is a MAJOR weakness of mine (just ask my boyfriend). I would love to try deleting simple carbs from my diet, but I don't know if I'd be able to do it. The rewards look like they'd totally be worth it so I'm definitely going to have to try this.

Are you still omitting them or was it just for one week?

  2. LMFP-I am still omitting them because I don't crave them and I just feel so good that I don't want to mess with success.

  3. My doctor continually recommends that I cut out all white sugar, white flour and sweets. She said it will guarantee weight loss success. However, have I listened to her? Of course....NOT. Instead I seem to want to put her kids thru college!

Great post! Maybe I will summon the courage to take your advice one day! :)

  4. Debbie-Getting it out of the house is the key for me. If it's not there, I won't run out to get it. Also, I had a big "to do" list of home improvement projects that I had to complete. Keeping busy always gets my mind off food and on other important things.

The added bonus is that I finished a wallpapering project that week too!

  5. I LOVE bread AND sweets, so I'm bad on both fronts. I'm pretty sure I have Celiac disease, so it's even more important that I cut out the breads I love and go gluten-free. While I'm at it I should probably cut back on the dairy, too. I used to do soy milk for awhile, but will be trying rice milk here soon. I hope it goes well. I wish my willpower was stronger.

  6. You can resist that bread and oil:) It is trouble! I don't really crave bread or sweets but my downfall is chips and crackers which are just as bad.

  7. I am a die hard bread lover. I would eat bread before any other food group. A piece of crusty bread with some really good olive oil for dipping is all I would need for a "last meal". Mmmmmm.... now I want some, but I won't! You are right about the cravings. Since I have switched over to whole grains, I don't yearn for that kind of bread anymore. Great post!

  8. I traded in 'wheat' bread for whole grain bread, it's done a world of good. The only two problem foods I still eat are popcorn and coffee with sugar ( i have limited it to two cups a day) other than that, no sugar. No white flour. It does really eliminate cravings. When I do tacos I do corn shells not white flour tortillas, if i do pizza...whole grain crust.

  9. I am doing something similar. I have given up sweets but have had a few carbs...not many though...I am over that crabby headachy yucky stage and feeling pretty good as well.

  10. Good advice; although I started to shake just thinking about going a day without carbs. If I had to pick carbs or my husband??? I need to lose 20lbs; so maybe I could try a meal-maybe? Your blog is an inspiration to me.

  15. bread, drool...

I like chocolate, I like only a few sweets, but bread...bread, yum.

I don't know that I could give up a slice for a day, let alone a week. Congrats on your success and extra energy!

  16. Just found your blog. I may have to try this. My biggest problem is that I cannot get my husband to eat anything "grainy". If it isn't made with white flour, he thinks it tastes like wood. Any suggestions?

  19. Bread is one of my downfalls too. When we go out to eat I ask them to not bring the bread or bring at dinner. If they bring it at dinner I am more likely to eat my food instead of the bread. Good job with the giving up the simple carbs.
